Angela Knight, former Chief Executive Officer, Energy UK, is the latest speaker to address the business community at the Bristol Distinguished Address Series (BDAs). The event will be hosted by UWE Bristol's Faculty of Environment and Technology.

In her talk, 'Energy just another Power Game?', Angela Knight will address how the decisions made by the UK's political parties have led the country towards an electricity shortage; meaning that there may not be enough electricity to meet demand in the coming years.

Angela will highlight the reasons for closing down the cheap coal-fired power stations in light of climate change, exploring how the timing does not correspond with building new renewable generators; that the cost is much higher than ever expected and that no one has explained this to the public.

She will also reflect on the practice of fracking; discussing whether we should or should not proceed with this and suggesting the actions that could be taken if industry, in particular (as the main user of electricity), is not to be rendered uncompetitive in international markets.

The Bristol Distinguished Address Series (BDAs) is one of the highlights of the University calendar and is a unique opportunity to hear about the challenges, issues and decisions being made at the highest level of strategic leadership, directly from the leaders of organisations driving UK business performance. The series is delivered by the Bristol Business School in partnership with ACCA,Bristol City Council, Bristol Junior Chamber,Bristol Post,Business West,CBI,CMI,FSB,ICAEW,IoD, and the West of England LEP.

Following the talk - there will also be an opportunity for the audience to put forward their issues and questions at this event.

Angela Knight is currently setting out on her fourth career as a non-executive director. She is currently the senior independent director on the Boards of Brewin Dolphin plc and Tullett Prebon Plc and is a member of the board of Transport for London. She has also served as a non-executive director on a number of plc boards.

Until the end of 2014, she was Chief Executive of the energy industry trade body Energy UK. Prior to that she was the Chief Executive of the British Bankers' Association and several years before that was the Chief Executive of the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers (now the Wealth Management Association).

Before running trade associations, Angela was MP for Erewash from 1992 - 1997, and during that time was a Treasury Minister after being Parliamentary Private Secretary to both the Rt. Hon. Kenneth Clarke MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and to Industry Minister Sir Tim Sainsbury MP.

She was honoured with a CBE for services to the financial services industry in 2007.

Series organiser, Professor Nicholas O'Regan says, “We are delighted by the calibre of this year's speakers, the series is an excellent opportunity for members of the business community in Bristol, as well as our own students, alumni and staff to hear directly from inspirational figures in industry with a wealth of strategic experience and leadership skills at the highest level.”

The series of talks continue throughout the year and will feature Chairmen, CEOs and institutional leaders representing a variety of sectors.
