Meet Tate Britain with Dr Madge Dresser

Issue date: 13 March 2015

Professor Madge Dresser

UWE Bristol's Professor Madge Dresser is to give a walking tour of the collection galleries at the Tate Britain, as part of the gallery's, 'Meet Tate Britain' event series.

The talk and tour, which will take place on Monday the 16th of March, 18:30 to 20:00, will examine and trace the connections between some of the works in the Tate collection and Britain's role in the Atlantic slave economy, such as the correlation between the slave trade, Empire and the British country house.

Professor Dresser, Royal Historical Society Fellow and Associate Professor in Social and Cultural British History at UWE Bristol, says, “Tate Britain's wonderful collection of British Art affords us both aesthetic pleasure and insights into Britain's history. I will be discussing selected paintings from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries to see what they can tell us about to slavery, race and the black presence in Britain.”
