Nursing charity Cavell Nurses' Trust is inviting applications for its annual student scholarship awards, which have now opened for 2014-15.

Dr Rachel Sales, Associate Head of Nursing and Midwifery and Learning and Teaching Fellow at the University of the West of England is joining the eminent judging panel for the first time.

Rachel commented, “I believe the scholarships give nursing and midwifery students the time and recognition they deserve for their skills, which very often they don't recognise as exceptional.

“Entering the awards really is an added extra when it comes to building leadership skills and is a moment of recognition for everyone taking part.”

Rachel supported Cavell Nurses' Trust at the Bristol Balloon Festival when she and more than 30 other volunteers from UWE took part in the BBC's World War 1 roadshow. They helped to set up and staff a replica Great War field hospital over the two-day event.

The awards, which provide travel scholarships of up to £2,000 for the winners, are aimed at recognising student nurses and midwives who go the 'extra mile'. The five hotly-contested awards consist of The Edith Cavell Leadership Award, Outstanding Student Nurse, Outstanding Student Midwife, Academic Achievement Award, and Community Award.

The Edith Cavell Leadership Award comes with a travel scholarship worth £2,000, while all the others are valued at £1,500 each. There are also prizes of a laptop/tablet for runners up in each category.

The deadline for entries for next year's scholarship awards is December 9 and other members of the judging panel include Barbara Dahill, Acting Director of Research Management and Angela Parry, Director of Clinical Education, both from King's College London; Helen Whyley, Nursing Officer for the Welsh Government; Stacy Johnson, Lecturer at University of Nottingham; and Sarah Snow, Lead Midwife for Education and Programme leader at the University of Worcester.

Students are invited to enter the 2014-15 Scholarship Awards by applying here .

The scholarship awards are designed to help nursing and midwifery students at the start of their careers and are open to students currently studying nursing or midwifery at universities in the UK.
