UWE Bristol Vice-Chancellor Professor Steven West has been presented with a Doctor of Laws in recognition of his work in healthcare and for Bristol at the University of Bristol.
Professor West studied podiatry at the Polytechnic of Central London, becoming the youngest ever Fellow of the Society of Chiropodists. He went on to study for a PhD at Kings College London, attaining many academic positions before arriving at UWE as Dean of Health and Social Care.
Following his successful tenure as Dean, he became Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2005 and was appointed Vice-Chancellor in 2008, redefining the university's strategy and ensuring that it is one of the best in the group that have been chartered since 1992.
Aside from his academic commitments he has held numerous roles in healthcare, including Chair of the Council of Deans of Health and a non-Executive Director of the Strategic Health Authority.
In August 2012, Professor West became Chair of University Alliance, which brings together 24 of the most innovative and enterprising universities in the UK – major institutions combining science and technology with a focus on delivering for the professions, business and the community.
In 2013, he became President of Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Chair of the West of England Initiative, and was appointed as the first Chair of the new West of England Academic Health Science Network (WEAHSN).
In the summer of 2014 Professor West will take up Chairmanship of the South West Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and join the Board of the CBI.
