Bursary announced in honour of brave Eleanor and the Inspirational Friends who rowed for her

Issue date: 30 May 2014

On Tuesday May 27, Atlantic rowing duo Hannah Lawton and Lauren Morton attended an event at which UWE Vice Chancellor, Steve West, and Student Vice President of Sport and Health, Chris White, announced the creation of a new student bursary in honour of Eleanor Ellis.

The Eleanor Ellis Bursary will be awarded to a student who has faced hardship or challenging circumstances and has displayed the same determination, courage and bravery that Elle showed throughout her battle with cancer.

The award will also reflect the determination that Hannah and Lauren showed in attempting to row across the Atlantic, helping to raise money for cancer charities and hospices, and honour the memory of their friend.

Each year the bursary will award £1000 to the student whose dedication and diligence matches that of Elle, Hannah and Lauren.

The event, which was held at the Marriot Hotel, was attended by the friends and family of the inspirational duo, as well as the Lord Mayor of Bristol and Eleanor's parents.

So far Hannah and Lauren have raised over £12,000 for charity, and there is still a chance to donate by visiting the Inspirational Friends webpage.
