East Street, Bedminster; Saturday 12 April 2014 11:00 to 15:00
UWE Bristol Student Enterprise team have been working with the Bedminster Town Team to rejuvenate East Street in Bedminster with the launch of a new market this Saturday 12 April. The market will run every Saturday for 12 weeks initially from 11:00 until 15:00.
Bedminster Town Team won funding from the Mary Portas fund and part of this has been designated to fund some market stalls on East Street. UWE Bristol Enterprise team have stepped in to manage the stalls that will feature small business start-ups run by students, staff and alumni at the university.
UWE Bristol has committed to run all of the market stalls for the first four weeks. Zoe L'Estrange, an intern Student Enterprise Officer in the UWE Careers Office, said, “We're supporting UWE business start-ups in a variety of businesses including homemade chocolates, cupcakes, greeting cards and a business selling handmade bags and children's' tepees. The quality of the products is amazing.”
Emily Measbay is currently in her second year studying Creative Product Design. She makes bags, cushions, soft furnishings and tepees for young children to play in. Emily said, “I'm really looking forward to taking part in the market at East Street; it is giving me the opportunity to set up a new business that I hope to develop whilst I am at University. If it all works out I hope to continue with this when I finish my degree.”
Zoe L'Estrange graduated in Photography from UWE Bristol in July 2013. Since November she has been employed as an enterprise intern in the UWE Careers Office, she said, “As part of my degree I took a module in professional practice which covered many aspects of setting up in business. When I graduated I set up a couple of enterprises, one a photography project on food that resulted in a student cook book and another project about setting up a market stall. I always knew that I would either like to set up in business or help enable others to do so and this internship is proving brilliant at bringing these ambitions and interests together. Working with the Bedminster Town Team has been very rewarding and we're all looking forward to the launch this Saturday.”
Ben Barker, local resident and member of Bedminster Town Team, said, “It's great to have the support of UWE's Student Enterprise Team as we seek to make East Street a more interesting and lively place. Both traders and shoppers will welcome the new market stalls.”
