UWE Bristol presents Soho Cinders
From 12 – 15 March 2014
Redgrave Theatre, Percival Road, Clifton, Bristol
This year's student production at UWE Bristol is the new musical by Stiles and Drewe, Soho Cinders.
The show can be seen at the Redgrave Theatre in Clifton from 12 to 15 March at 19:30 with a matinee on Saturday 15 March at 14:30.
Senior Lecturer in Musical Theatre, Ian Henderson from the The Centre for Performing Arts said, “We're delighted to be the first company to perform the show outside London and are thrilled to welcome the composer George Stiles as a guest to one of their evening performances. It's an exciting opportunity for our talented cast of student actors and musicians to meet such a renowned composer and I'm sure this will motivate them to give a great performance.”
Edgy, fun and deliciously naughty, this new show is a must for anyone who has a wicked sense of humour.
The show received its world premiere off-West End at London's Soho Theatre in 2012. It celebrates London's most colourful district with a satirical yet compassionate take on the fable of Cinderella. The legendary heart-warming story as we know it, is this time, set in the modern day. It tells the story of impoverished student Robbie's illicit love affair with mayoral candidate James Prince. Thrown into the mix in this satirical comedy are two outrageous lap-dancing step-sisters, a loyal friend who runs a laundrette and of course a devoted fiancée.
James and Robbie's two very different worlds collide with an explosive tale combining politics, sex scandals, true love and of course a fairy tale ending. All this with much laughter and a brand new score that is vital and contemporary and will be playing through your head long past the stroke of midnight!
Stiles and Drewe said of their new creation, “We agreed we'd like to write something contemporary, funny – satirical even – with a catchy pop score. We wanted to write about our wonderful city, we wanted to write about the way people have become so disenchanted with their politicians and we wanted to write about the complexities of love – gay and straight – in the breakneck pace of the internet age.
Soho Cinders is a story about a love that blossoms between two people of different generations and backgrounds and what they learn from each. Most importantly we wanted to write a set of songs that could work outside the context of the show and yet still drive the story forwards. Although loosely based on Cinderella, Soho Cinders is a brand new story.”
