UWE Bristol undergraduates given gift of YourStreet

Issue date: 11 September 2013

This year's new intake of UWE Bristol undergraduates will receive a free YourStreet gift card, worth £10, upon registering for their chosen course. The card is valid in a wide range of Bristol's independent retailers and is an attempt by the University to help new students settle into life in Bristol as well to promote local independent retailers and services.

John Rushforth, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UWE Bristol said, “We are pleased to be part of this, since it demonstrates both our commitment to our students and the local community. We hope that others will be able to follow our lead since support for independents can ensure that we all can continue to enjoy the vibrant and diverse opportunities they provide.”

The brainchild of Anne-Louise Perez and UWE Alumna Imogen McIntosh, the aim of the YourStreet scheme is to encourage thriving high streets, strong communities and vibrant local economies.

“We had a pool of money to spend on a friend for her birthday,” Anne-Louise states, “but we couldn't decide which of Bristol's many great indie shops to choose from. We thought a multi-store gift card would be an ideal present but it became apparent that there was no such thing for independent stores, so we created the YourStreet Gift Card.

“We wanted to develop a product that would benefit everyone. We hope the card will increase footfall and spending for independent traders whilst simultaneously offering the 'gift of choice' for consumers. We also see this as an innovative way for Corporates to demonstrate support for their local economy and community.”

The gift cards will be launched at an event held at The Tobacco Factory Yard, Bedminster, on 28 September, 11 am – 4 pm, and will feature 40 market stalls run by local traders, a barbeque, a performance from UWE's CPA (Centre for Performing Arts) musicians, an open mic music stage, children's face painting and other creative activities. Bedminster Town Team, and UWE representatives will be there on the day to show their support.

The gift cards will be distributed to UWE students at the ECC and Bower Ashton registration events. Students can find a full directory of retailers and services that accept the card on the website where family members and friends can also top up the cards, thereby extending the support to the students and independent retailers. Returning students, staff and general public can also purchase YourStreet Gift Cards from the site.
