UWE Bristol award Honorary Degree to Mary Prior MBE DStJ JP

UWE Bristol will award the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration to Mary Prior MBE DStJ JP in recognition of her remarkable record of public and charitable service and her outstanding business career.

The Honorary Degree will be conferred at the Awards Ceremony of the Faculty of Business and Law on Thursday 25 July at Bristol Cathedral.

Mrs Prior was appointed Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol in September 2007 having served as a Deputy Lieutenant of Bristol from 1996. Since her appointment she has become patron or president of over 30 different charities and organisations.

She was born in Hambrook, Bristol and educated at Kingswood Grammar School. She was the sales and marketing director of Alexandra plc, an international supplier of work wear and uniforms, until retirement in 1997. She is also partner in a family beef farm and director of a small private property company.

Mrs Prior is a patron and a vice-president of the Quartet Community Foundation having previously been a trustee and past chairman of the North Somerset committee. She is a patron of the Bristol Cathedral Trust, and was formerly a trustee, having served as vice-chairman of the Trust and chairman of the Executive. She was awarded the MBE in 1996 for services to the Bristol Cathedral Trust and is joint founding patron of the music partnership at Bristol Cathedral.

She was a trustee of St Monica Trust for nine years, serving as chairman of the community support fund committee and chairman of the audit committee.

Mrs Prior was a lay member of the Lord Chancellor's Bristol Advisory Committee for the appointment of magistrates for nine years and, as Lord-Lieutenant, now chairs the Commission for Bristol and North Avon Magistrates.

She served as a member of UWE Bristol Business School Advisory Board, a director of Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Initiative, a member of the BBC Radio Bristol Advisory Board and a member of the British Olympics Appeal Bristol Committee.

She was appointed Commander of the Order of St. John in 2009 and Dame of the Order of St John in 2012. She was awarded the Honorary Degree of Master of Business Administration by UWE in 2009. She was president of the Dolphin Society in 2007 and is a member of the Society of Merchant Venturers.
