Next year's new intake of UWE Bristol undergraduates will be welcomed with a YourStreet gift card worth £10, valid in a wide range of Bristol's independent retailers.

It will provide an instant introduction to the joys of shopping at Bristol's quirky and individual shops in areas such as Gloucester Road, North Street Bedminster, Clifton Village, Whiteladies Road and Park Street.

YourStreet Ltd is an innovative gift card scheme for independent retailers started by UWE alumna Imogen McIntosh and Anne-Louise Perez. It is a multi-store gift card redeemable only in independent shops and services. The scheme is being pioneered in Bristol but there are plans to roll out it out nation-wide.

John Rushforth, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at UWE Bristol said, “We are pleased to be part of this, since it demonstrates both our commitment to our students and the local community. We hope that others will be able to follow our lead since support for independents can ensure that we all can continue to enjoy the vibrant and diverse opportunities that they provide.”

The launch will take place at Nailsea Electrical & 102 Cookery School, Gloucester Road, and will feature Tom Herbert of the Baker Brothers. Mayor George Ferguson and UWE representatives will be there to show their support.

More than 80 traders have already signed up for the scheme and will accept the cards which can be topped up by parents and friends of the students if they want to give them a gift that supports local retailers. The card can also be used to load monthly living allowances on as there is a good variety of shops including butchers, hairdressers, greengrocers as well as cafes, fashion and gift shops.

At the launch will be 24 market stalls all run by independent traders from Bristol who have signed up to YourStreet gift cards, including Gopal Curry Shack, Reason Interiors, Mexican street food, Turkish food, Oyster bar, Joe's Bakery and many more.

Imogen said, “Statistics from the Gift Card & Voucher Association indicate that 38% of the UK population buy gift cards. Currently the profits go to the corporate sector and chain stores. YourStreet aims to bring some of that to our independent retailers.

“We saw this gap in the market when we were celebrating a friend's birthday and had £150 to spend on a gift. It became a difficult choice deciding where to spend it, and it dawned on us the answer would be a gift card for use in lots of independent shops!

“YourStreet gift cards will be available to purchase online via www.yourstreetgiftcards.com.”

The launch will include live music from Bristol 20-piece jazz band, Sisters of Swing. Competition prizes on the day include an entire kitchen courtesy of Nailsea Electrical, a SMEG fridge and YourStreet gift cards. Children can enjoy face paints and craft workshops with Art Rules.
