Redgrave Theatre, Clifton - Wednesday 20 March to Saturday 23 March 2013
This year's student showcase production at the University of the West of England's Centre for Performing Arts (CPA) is 'Honk!' The show will take place at the Redgrave Theatre in Clifton from Wednesday 20 March to Saturday 23 March at 19:30 with a matinee performance on Saturday 23 March at 14:30.
'Honk!' is a musical re-telling of the Hans Christian Andersen children's tale 'The Ugly Duckling'. In this witty reimagining, which sees the farmyard animals of the source material singing, dancing and telling jokes, the talented cast bring this famous fairy tale to life in all its colourful and heart-warming glory. Featuring such wonderful character names as Lowbutt, Greylag, Barnacles and Pinkfoot and with a score full of jaunty numbers which include 'Joy of Motherhood', 'It Takes All Sorts' and 'Warts and All', 'Honk!' is an enjoyable and ingenious musical for all ages.
During spring time on an old farm, an unusual looking duckling, Ugly, appears amidst a gaggle of newly hatched Mallards. It soon becomes apparent that Ugly is very different from his brothers and sisters, not only in appearance, but also in vocal ability, emitting a loud 'Honk!' instead of his siblings cute 'Quack.' Lured away from the safety of his family by a villainous cat, poor Ugly escapes but is unable to find his way home; and so begins an adventure that will see the young duckling discover his birth mother, love and his true identity.
The show is directed by Alex Turasiewicz, choreographed by Jacquie Bell, with costume and set design by John Cousins and Ian Henderson as musical director and producer.
Originally written in 1993 by Anthony Drewe with music by George Stiles, 'Honk!' opened in the West End in 1999 and in 2000 won the Olivier Award. A world-wide stage sensation, the show has been seen by over 5 million people through over 8000 productions. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the fun and laughter of this brilliant and mesmeric musical.
