UWE Bristol expert invited to chair Environment and Global Change Panel

The Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) have invited UWE Bristol's eminent air quality and climate change expert, Professor Jim Longhurst to chair its Environment and Global Change panel.

Professor Longhurst is Assistant Vice-Chancellor: Environment and Sustainability, co-director of UWE's Institute for Sustainability, Health and the Environment, and director of the Air Quality Management Resource Centre.

He said, “I am delighted and honoured to have been invited to chair this important research evaluation process for The Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The invitation recognises my international research leadership experience and I will be able to contribute my own scientific expertise in the evaluation of proposals addressing the problems of air pollution and carbon management.”

The Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) is the public research-funding agency which selects and distributes research funds for a wide range of scientific fields of research. FCT places high importance on the international peer-review evaluation process as a critical element to ensure credibility and quality in all its activities. FCT has established six high-level panels of leading field scientists to take part in the 2012 evaluation process and selection of the best applications.

Professor Longhurst has been invited to chair The Environment and Global Change panel that will consider some 335 proposals in four sub themes:

• Global Environmental Change

• Sustainable Management of Resources

• Environmental Technologies

• Environmental Modelling and Assessment
