UWE sponsors Pride Bristol 2012

Issue date: 09 July 2012

UWE Bristol is sponsoring Pride Bristol 2012 on 14 July. The event will celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities across the South West in the spirit of diversity.

The theme We Are: Proud is the chance for LGBT people, their friends, families and the whole of the South West to stand up and declare they are proud of who they are and their loved ones. Pride Bristol 2012 culminates in a one day festival at College Green on Saturday 14 July following a week of special events, including LGBT History, Sports, a special Shakespeare night, performance theatre from Tom Marshman and a very special Pride Week party with a little something from Siobhan Fahey.

UWE Bristol's Equality and Diversity Champion, Professor Ron Ritchie, Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Partnerships, Diversity and Civic Engagement, said, “UWE Bristol's strong commitment to becoming an inclusive University must not be compromised in these challenging times. We believe that an inclusive University benefits all students and staff and we are proud of our diverse university community. I regard UWE Bristol's sponsorship of Pride as one of the important ways in which we demonstrate our commitment to diversity and promote UWE Bristol as an inclusive, accessible and welcoming learning community.”

UWE Bristol's strong commitment to LGBT equality has been strengthened by joining the Stonewall Diversity Champion programme and the University has been working closely with Stonewall and stakeholders to review and develop the University's LGBT equality action plan.

Emmanuel Okon, Students' Union President, and Louise Goux-Wirth, Vice President Community and Welfare, of UWE Students' Union said, “The Students' Union is proud to be supporting Bristol Pride. LGBT equality has been a key campaign for UWE Students' Union this past year, and supporting events like Bristol Pride resonates a clear message that we are proud of our diverse community. Equality, diversity and inclusivity are at the very heart of what we do. Thousands of people around the world are discriminated against because of who they love; it is crucial that events such as Bristol Pride happen, and are strong, visual and bold. Most importantly that they bring together a wave of people to say: We Are Proud.”
