UWE runs sports taster day to mark Olympic torch relay

Issue date: 22 May 2012

UWE Bristol is holding a sports taster day on 23 May to highlight its sports-related courses and opportunities for prospective students. The event is timed to coincide with the Olympic Flame being carried through Bristol.

Caroline Tarbuck, of UWE's Schools and Colleges Partnerships Service, said, “We will showcase various related academic programmes such as BSc Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation, and an introduction to Initial Teacher Education [ITE] through physical education, which are run at UWE. This is a great opportunity for students from Filton College to meet some of UWE's Elite Athletes in sports such as squash and hockey, and to see the top-class facilities at UWE's Centre for Sport.”

The sports taster day was also held recently for City Academy, Bridgwater College and Weston College students who enjoyed it. Their comments included,

“The courses are good and the sports offered excellent,” “Really good range of facilities and very helpful staff” and “Learnt more about sports therapy which interests me.”

Four lucky UWE Torchbearers, students Sarah Clark and Chris Dalley and staff members Jo Earl and Louise Goux-Wirth, Vice-President (UWE Students' Union) are carrying the Olympic Flame through Bristol and surrounding counties as it travels on its 70 day journey before the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Kenyan Olympic Team will be based at UWE Bristol and Filton College from Monday July 2 to July 16 before entering the Olympic Village in London.
