Wessex Red awards prize to millionth bus passenger

Issue date: 29 March 2012

Wessex Red surprised a lucky passenger today, Thursday 29 March with a prize for being the millionth passenger to use the new service.

Since its launch in September 2011 Wessex Red has carried a million passengers on its routes - run in partnership with UWE Bristol and the University of Bristol. The service, formerly called Ulink, was relaunched last year and is now open to the general public as well as those studying or working at the City's university campuses.

A £50 Shopping voucher for The Mall and £25 of UWE catering vouchers were presented to Olivia Davidson a Drama student at UWE as she stepped onto the U3 bus at the Frenchay Campus.

Olivia said “I am surprised and delighted to win this prize. I use the bus regularly for getting to and from the University. It's great to have some extra money for shopping and the catering vouchers will be useful.”

Justin Thomson, Commercial Manager for Wessex said, “Wessex is delighted to be working in partnership with UWE and the University of Bristol on providing a sustainable transport service to the City's university campuses. Since September the Wessex Red brand has been going from strength to strength, with the introduction of new and revised services. We are very pleased today to welcome our 1 millionth passenger since September 2011 and look forward to carrying many more customers as the service develops.”

Steve Ward, UWE Travel Planner said, “We are delighted to have carried a million passenger journeys since the autumn. This shows that Wessex Connect is not only a popular choice for students it's becoming an increasingly attractive option for the general public too. With investment in a quality service UWE and Wessex Connect are confident that we can maintain our growth in passenger numbers which has now continued for four consecutive years.”

The timetables on the most popular routes U2, U3 and U5 now run on a year round timetable, providing consistency for local users. Other Wessex Red routes now operating all year round are: U2 (UWE to City Centre via Gloucester Road); U3 (Old Market to UWE via Fishponds) and U5 (UWE to City Centre via Henleaze and Whiteladies Road).
