Issue date: 22 March 2012

British hurdling athlete, Andrew Pozzi made an impressive senior debut finishing fourth in the 60m hurdles final at the recent Word Indoor Championships in Istanbul. Competing against the world's best, Andrew twice broke his personal best to achieve a new time of 7.56s in the lead up to the final.

Business student Andrew, has been supported through the university's 'EliteUWE' scheme entitling athletes to specialist physiotherapy, strength and conditioning training and nutritional guidance. He is also supported by UK Athletics and coached by their National Hurdles Coach, Malcolm Arnold, to whom he attributes a great deal of his success and development.

Steve Lock, Strength and Conditioning manager at UWE Bristol said, “Andrew has been a member of the UWE Bristol elite athlete group for the past two years where he has continued to develop his athletic ability during this time. Andrew is a valuable member of the elite group and when he is not competing can regularly be found training in the UWE Bristol Performance Gym (WFG) where he has attained personal bests this year in the clean exercise. Andrew is very focused and driven in his training but always has time for other UWE Bristol Elite athletes, providing motivation and advice wherever possible. We are very proud to have him as a member of the UWE Bristol elite team and look forward to providing continued support to help Andrew achieve his goals for this year.”

At 19 years old Andrew is undoubtedly a rising star in GB athletics and has an impressive record of achievements including being the current UK Senior indoor champion and holding the British Junior Record (13.29s in the U20 100m hurdles). Andrew was the gold medallist in the 60m hurdles at last month's British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Indoor Championships in Sheffield.

Andrew said, “I am extremely pleased with the success I have experienced this year. I managed silver at last year's BUCS Championships so to improve with Gold and a Championship Record shows really promising progress. I was proud to achieve a good result for UWE Bristol and it was great to win the Student UK Title as well as the Senior UK Title. I am pleased with my results at the World Indoor Championships from both a time and placing perspective. It is a fantastic place to start my senior career and I hope it continues to progress from here.”

Andrew Pozzi set his sights on senior competitions immediately after winning the silver medal at the 2011 European Junior Athletics Championships with a time of 13.57. He was ranked as the fastest Junior hurdler in Europe for the 110m Hurdles, 2011. He was also winner of the 'Outstanding Athlete of the Year' award at the UK Athletics Awards on 26 November 2011.
