Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Mr Henry Elwes, has invited Alfred Morris, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West of England to serve as a Deputy Lieutenant. Mr Morris has replied to Mr Elwes saying that he is delighted to accept the invitation and regards it as a considerable honour.

Editor’s notes

1. The role of Deputy Lieutenant is honorific and involves deputising occasionally for the Lord Lieutenant and assisting him in his role as the 'eyes and ears' of the Queen throughout the area of the lieutenancy. Appointments are made following consultation with Buckingham Palace and Deputy Lieutenants transfer from the active to the supernumerary list on their 75th birthday.

2. The text of the Lord Lieutenant's announcement is as follows :

Since 1559 Gloucestershire has had a Lord Lieutenant who was originally tasked with training local men to lead them against rebels and foreign invaders.

The current Lord Lieutenant Henry Elwes has been the Queen's ceremonial representative for Gloucestershire since 1992 and is responsible for a wide range of public duties.

Thankfully, the recruitment and training of local armies is no longer a necessary task but given the wide range of civic events and duties that the Lieutenant is involved in, it is still necessary for him to have deputies, who will also be his eyes and ears in the community.

The number of deputies is dependent on the population of the county and 6 new appointments have now been announced.

The new deputies have all made significant contributions either nationally, through military service or for their support for local voluntary endeavour. They are :

Miss Joanna Trollope OBE, Cheltenham
Mr John Holroyd CBE CVO MA, Gloucester
Colonel Andrew Hodson TD BA, Frampton on Severn
Air Vice-Marshal Professor Tony Mason CB CBE MA DSc FRAeS, Cheltenham
Mr Alfred Morris MA FCA FSS Hon LLD (Bristol) Hon RWA, Old Sodbury
Mr Michael Stone, Wooton-Under-Edge

Mr Elwes says : "It is especially pleasing to be able to make this announcement during the Queen's Golden Jubilee year. I am sure that the county's new deputies will find their role interesting and I look forward to their support."
