Health impact assessment for youngsters

Issue date: 17 October 2011

Belfast Healthy City invited ISHE's Marcus Grant to pilot health impact assessment of the local environment with eight and nine year olds in two schools in Belfast.

Participatory exercises involving images of the public realm were used to kick start conversations with the children about what keeps them healthy and what detracts from their health in their everyday lives. The session culminated in them making pictures of 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' local areas.

In later sessions the same children will go out and document areas around their school and homes, using photography and other recording methods. The final outcomes are to be used as feedback for local policy makers and as contributions to plans for environmental improvement programmes.
