UWE to host International Hockey Tournament

Issue date: 06 September 2011

The University of the West of England's Centre for Sport will be hosting top hockey teams from across the country and Ireland at its world class hockey pitch on 10 -11 September 2011 when the second UWE Hockey trophy gets underway.

The UWE Hockey trophy is a six team invitational hockey event that ran for the first time in 2010.Teams attending this year include: Brighton, Maidstone, Corinthians, Lichfield, Bristol-UWE and local rivals Firebrands HC.

Teams will be playing each other throughout the weekend in a round robin format and will be keen to get their name on the trophy at the presentation on Sunday afternoon.

The tournament venue is the University of the West of England's state of the art hockey centre, the home to the Hockey West National Performance Centre and also the venue for the 2008 UK School Games, 2009 EHL Playoffs and 2010 BUCS Hockey Semi-Finals. The purpose built hockey facility provides an unrivalled experience for players and spectators alike, with covered seating for those enjoying the action on the pitch.

UWE Head Hockey Coach, Turloch O'Siochain, said, “'This year's tournament should be another exciting one as we welcome teams from the English Conference North and Ireland's IHL in Litchfield HC and Corinthians HC respectfully. The new format will see six men's teams competing for top honours. I for one will be looking to integrate some new recruits while assessing the current level of those returning after a long summer break and just under a month to go before the season begins.”

The University of the West of England is being supported by local partner clubs Bristol-UWE HC and Redland-UWE HC and competing players will be supported by UWE Centre for Sport's resident sports therapist who will be on hand throughout the event.

Spectators are welcome to attend, free of charge, and car parking is available at the Centre for Sport. A BBQ will be available throughout the weekend.
