UWE student selected for Jerwood Drawing Prize

Issue date: 05 August 2009

Work by Roxanne Goffin

Drawing and Applied Arts student Rox Goffin has been selected to show her work as part of the prestigious Jerwood Drawing Prize 2009 exhibition.

Rox, who has just completed the first year of her course, submitted a piece called 'Untitled', which she created as part of a UWE project in June. The inspiration for her work comes from the exploration of bones, which are objects she finds extremely curious and powerful.

She says: "I realised that the preparation process and the surface texture of the cow bones I was using were very appealing and so I began drawing directly onto the bone. I have drawn beetles onto them, which represents my research into entomology (the study of insects using pins to display them), which is also why I used nails to hold the bones together."

One of 75 selected pieces chosen from over 2200 submitted drawings, Rox's work will be on show in London, Cardiff, Aberdeen, Cambridge, Bideford and Cheltenham as part of the touring exhibition, and printed in the exhibition catalogue, giving her valuable exposure to the public and the arts world.

Rox says: "I didn't realise how important the Jerwood Drawing Prize was until after I registered and I honestly believed I had no chance. This will be the first time I have been regarded as a professional artist. Just the thought of my work being on display for hundreds, even thousands, of people around the UK to see makes me feel slightly sick with excitement!"

As one of the successful entrants, Rox has been invited to attend a private view at Jerwood Space, London on 15 September where the winners of two student awards and an overall first and second prize will be announced. The winners will be decided by selection a panel including the Artist Tania Kovats; Roger Malbert, Senior Curator, Hayward Touring Exhibitions, South Bank Centre; and Nicholas Usherwood, Writer, Art Critic and Curator.

Dawn Mason, Drawing and Applied Arts Programme Leader says "It is extremely encouraging for Rox to achieve entry into a major exhibition of established and emerging artists at such an early stage in her degree. This is a valuable platform for introducing her work to the wider public as well as industry and will give her a helping hand into starting her career as an artist. We wish her the best of luck."
