UWE's Gane Trust scholarship winner announced

Issue date: 15 June 2011

UWE's Department of Art and Design has awarded this year's Gane Trust scholarship to Abbie Vickress, a second year Graphic Design student.

The £1000 scholarship is intended to give the winning student the opportunity to enhance their studies through travel which otherwise may not have been available to them. The Gane Trust is a Bristol based charity which has a particular interest in art, design and craftsmanship.

Abbie will travel to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia this summer to develop her third year project, which will investigate how western design has infiltrated South East Asian graphic design to the exclusion of more local characteristics and historical precedents and the ways in which different cultures collide in everyday graphic design.

Abbie plans to create a typeface which links Latin script with traditional South East Asian approaches to typography and will present a report on her experiences to UWE staff, students and Gane Trust representatives when she returns to UWE in September.

Peter Metcalfe, from the Gane Trust, said that he was delighted to hear of Abbie's win: “Her project sounds not only relevant but exciting and shall personally look forward to hearing about the experiences she has gained as a result of the award.”

Abbie said: "When I applied for the Travel Bursary from the Gane Trust I never dreamt I would actually win it, my ideas were quite ambitious and I would have to fund a huge part of the trip myself. But when I got the email I was over the moon, not only can I travel to an area of the world that I have been longing to explore for some time now, but being given the opportunity to orientate it around a project and subject that I love, was just something else.

I am very excited about what this trip will do for both my course and career. So thank you Gane Trust and all those who have helped."
