UWE presents the Madness musical 'Our House'

Issue date: 15 February 2011

This year's student production at the University of the West of England's Centre for Performing Arts (CPA) is 'Our House'. The show will be held at the Redgrave Theatre in Clifton from Wednesday 2 March to Saturday 5 March at 19:30 with a matinee on 5 March at 14:30.

The show is based around the slapstick, comically endearing music of the famous 1980s band Madness, known as Suggs and the Nutty boys. The talented cast bring the famously fun-loving hits to life along with a plot that cleverly combines hilarious teenage moments with thoughtful poignancy. For those who remember singing along (loudly!) to those zany numbers 'Baggy Trousers', 'Driving in my Car', 'House of Fun' and the title tune 'Our House' this will be a trip down memory lane. For those too young to remember, it's an opportunity to come along and find out why Madness became such a legend with the nation and even now 30 years later are still touring and releasing new material.

On a balmy summer's evening in north London the main character Joe Casey is out on his 16th birthday with his dream date Sarah. Unable to resist showing off he breaks into a newly built apartment block and gets caught. While waiting for the police to arrive Joe must choose between staying to face his punishment or making a run for it. At this point his character divides into two – the Good Joe and the Bad Jo, and the action-packed plot follows both these stories.

The show is directed by Alex Turasiewicz, with Jacquie Bell as choreographer, John Cousins designing set and costumes and Ian Henderson as producer and musical director.

With a script written by Tim Firth, the original production opened in the West End at the Cambridge Theatre in 2002 and in 2003 won the Laurence Olivier Award. This is a great opportunity to see an award winning musical and enjoy time-honoured pop classics.
