UWE students to run Ultra challenge in aid of Combat Stress

Issue date: 17 January 2011

Student Marc May is planning to take part in a 50km charity run with three other students from the University of the West of England's Athletics club in aid of the charity Combat Stress.

Along with running mate Louis Macleod, Marc is aiming to run the 50km Ultra marathon around London from Streatham Common to Wembley on 20 February. The Ultra race is an ideal step-up for athletes wanting to test themselves at the next level from marathon running and is run on London's Capital Ring route.

Along with support members Lou Card and Huw Llywelyn Jones, who are providing coaching, admin and transport as well as moral support, the team is aiming to raise at least £2000 for the charity. Sponsors UWE and Envira-Mech Ltd have both contributed to the costs of the run.

Marc, who is studying law at UWE said, “The charity is one which I can relate to having been a soldier before I was a student. So far we have raised £475 and anyone who would like to contribute can do so at www.justgiving.com/ultrarunlondon

“I am well aware of the danger of mental illness faced by our troops coming home from war zones. I feel that we owe these people a duty of care when they return. Some soldiers will face extreme psychological difficulties coming to terms with what they have experienced and the Combat Stress charity provides essential support services for those in need.”

Marc served in Iraq for six months during 2007, and says he can fully understand both the difficulties of acclimatising to 'normal' civilian life and also soldiers' pride, which can further exacerbate mental health issues as they may be reluctant to seek help until a late stage.

“By this point though, it may already be too late to keep hold of relationships and prevent the onset of unhealthy coping mechanisms such as drug abuse or alcoholism,” he said.

This is only the second time the flagship 50K London Ultra race has been run and it will be the second event in the 9bar UK ULTRArace Championship calendar.
