UWE boosts career prospects by repeating internship scheme

Issue date: 11 January 2011

The University of the West of England is launching a new round of Graduate Internships during 2011 following the success of the previous scheme.

The new programme is open to any business that can offer a quality project or work experience opportunity that will enhance the employment prospects for 2010 UWE graduates by helping them to develop skills, knowledge and confidence.

Maggie Westgarth, UWE Careers, said, “UWE will pay employers a subsidy of £1000, making this an effective and low risk opportunity for employers to build lasting foundations and relationships not just with UWE and its current alumni but for future generations as well. We ran a similar scheme last year and testimonials from the businesses that took part have been overwhelmingly positive and many graduates have ended up securing full time work.

“This scheme will be of huge benefit to currently unemployed 2010 graduates or those who are in work that is not helping them to gather the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to move on in their career. We are also encouraging graduates to approach employers speculatively, which will improve their confidence and skills for progression throughout their career.”

UWE has invested in the future of its alumni and allocated significant funding to assist 2010 UWE graduates in finding paid internships. The scheme offers graduates a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable work experience and earn at least £250 per week over an eight week period.

Feedback from employers

Evil Genius Ltd: The scheme is an excellent opportunity for both interns and businesses to establish contacts in both directions. From my perspective it's great to get help on a project I've invested a huge amount of time in over a number of years.

Solsoft Technology: Having taken on both of our interns, we're obviously extremely grateful to UWE for backing such a great scheme.

Asylumcare & Housing Support Ltd: The internship made a huge difference to our organisation. With the help of the internship we have done a business plan, website, and created support services for our tenants. We have also tried different graduates with reasonable costs, as a result of this we are very likely to take two new graduates as permanent staff. The UWE team were very supportive through the process. Thank UWE for supporting the organisation into the next stage!

Feedback from interns

Robin Smith (Intern at eStress): The internship scheme has been invaluable to me for getting some more experience that is relevant to my degree.

Khubaib Asadullah (Intern at Refrigeration Developments and Testing Ltd): I would like to thank UWE Graduate Internship Program. I gained real insight into the practical world of work during my internship. It also increased my confidence.

Stefanie Georgadidis (Intern at Andrew Kenyon Architects): The internship has opened new doors and provided me with some valuable experience to add to my CV.
