UWE to host Men's Premier Division England Hockey Matches

Issue date: 08 December 2010

The University of the West of England will play host to world class indoor hockey games this weekend (11-12 December 2010) as the first week of the England Hockey Indoor Men's Premier Divisionget underway.

Richard Bennett, Sports Performance Manager, said, “For the third year in succession we are proud to welcome England Hockey back to the Centre for Sport. We are looking forward to three weekends of the best indoor hockey in the country and a chance for all hockey fans in Bristol to see their favourite international players.”

The competition standard sports hall will provide an excellent venue for this high-profile event in the world of indoor hockey with the top six teams from across the UK coming to take part.

With most outdoor hockey on hold due to the early winter freeze, these matches give fans the opportunity to watch the highest level of hockey in the comfort of an indoor venue.

The games are set to begin on Saturday 11 December 2010 from 10:30 when Reading take on Loughborough Students followed by East Grinstead versus St Albans at 11:30. The games continue on Sunday 12 December 2010 with the second round of matches taking place in the New Year over the weekend of the 15-16 January 2011. The games will run all day on both Saturdays with the last game commencing at 18:30 and from 9:00-18:00 on both Sundays. Each game will run for 20 minutes each way.

The top four teams will qualify to enter the National Indoor Hockey Championships at the Wembley Arena on Sunday 30 January 2011. The South Eastern venue will provide a different host to last year where it was held at Trent FM Arena in Nottingham and four years prior to that at the NIA at Birmingham.

A strong partnership between England Hockey and UWE began in 2007 when a consortium between UWE and the Universities of Bristol and Bath was chosen to be a National Performance Centre. The Universities' World Class AstroTurf Pitch was a key component in securing this title. The National players aged 18 are encouraged to apply to one of the three universities so that they can meet more regularly for mentoring and training by English Hockey staff.
