UWE awards Honorary Master of Education to Lennox Lewis

The University of the West of England will award the Honorary Degree of Master of Education to Lennox O'Reilly Augustus Lewis in recognition of his considerable position and standing in St Vincent and the Grenadines, his role as a powerful advocate for the University, and the ways in which he has demonstrated his complete commitment to, and engagement with, individual staff and students.

The Honorary Degree will be conferred at the Awards Ceremony of the School of Education on Monday 22 November at 14.00 at Bristol Cathedral.

Lennox Lewis was born in September 1944 in Georgetown, St Vincent. He was educated in St Vincent, Scotland and London, completing a Teachers Certificate at the Teachers' College (UWI) St Vincent in 1969, a Bachelor's in Education Studies at the University of Stirling in 1988, and a Certificate in Education Inspection and Supervision at the University of London in 1993.

In the 19 years between 1971 and 1990, Lennox Lewis served as the principal of seven primary schools: Union Methodist, Biabou Methodist, South Rivers Methodist, Richland Park Government, Richmond Hill Government, Kingstown Preparatory, New Kingstown Primary (C.W. Prescod).

In 1990 Lennox Lewis took up the position of Senior Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, St Vincent. He performed this role until 1999, holding responsibilities for primary education, school inspection, and planning, conducting training for teachers and head teachers and representing the Ministry at various events. He subsequently served as co-ordinator for the Ministry's In-Service Teacher Training Programme in 2006. For the past two years he has been a member of the Education Advisory Board in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Since 2007 Lennox Lewis has been involved in a UWE Leadership and Management Project run with the Government of St Vincent. The project was officially launched in St Vincent on 29 March 2007 by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education St Vincent and other senior Ministry officials. As part of this project Lennox Lewis visited UWE's Faculty of Education and local schools in Bristol in 2007. In 2007-2008 he held the post of Deputy Team Leader for the UWE Education Management Degree for Primary Principals, Deputy Principals and Senior Teachers in St Vincent. Then, in 2009-10, Lennox Lewis was Deputy Team Leader for the UWE Post Graduate Diploma for Primary and Secondary Principals in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Lennox Lewis is also a fully accredited local preacher for the Methodist Church.
