ADVENT CAROL SERVICES AT BRISTOL CATHEDRAL

Issue date: 04 December 2001

The University of the West of England will be holding their annual Advent Carol Service in Bristol Cathedral on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 December at 8.00pm.

This service will be the last for Canon Shaun Darley, who will be retiring as Senior Chaplain on 31 December.

Taking part this year will be the University Singers and Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Choir, and students of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. The BOV students will read, and also re-enact parts of the Christmas Story from The Mystery Plays, under the direction of Christopher Denys.

The service starts quietly in near-darkness, and ends with the Hallelujah Chorus.

A collection will be taken during the service for the benefit of both local and national charities, and after the service there will be mincepies and mulled wine (or soft drinks) for everyone.

Shaun remarked "This is a wonderful occasion, with more than 150 students and staff from the University taking part in leading the music. It is also very popular. We are always delighted to welcome former students, retired staff, and all our friends to this service."

Because of the popularity of this service, tickets are required. (There is a small charge of £3.00 towards the cost of refreshments). These are available from the Octagon, UWE Frenchay campus, Coldharbour Lane, Frenchay, Bristol, BS16 1QY. Telephone 0117 344 2334.
