Free letting agency for UWE students

Issue date: 09 September 2010

Chris Scull and Sally Jones Students at the University of the West of England will soon benefit from expert letting advice and support from a new letting service operated by the UWE Students' Union.

Student lettings will complement the service already offered by the University managed Accommodation Services. 'Student Lettings' will operate in a similar way to a high street letting agency and will be operational from Monday 13 September 2010.

Student Lettings will be run by Chris Scull and Sally Jones, who between them have over 40 years of property letting and financial planning experience.

Chris Scull explains, “We will be based on the Frenchay Campus and the key emphasis is on service delivery. We're here to guide students through the process and to help them avoid some of the pitfalls they may face. By offering a 'free to students' service, we hope to ease the financial burden on what for some students, is their second largest expenditure.

“Student Lettings will provide a fantastic opportunity for private landlords to reach a key market sector. As the agency is based in the Student Union on UWE's main Frenchay Campus we hold a unique position with direct access to over 33,000 students. The Lettings service will provide landlords with full management or a let only service depending upon requirements.”

Sally Jones comments, “Landlords can select the service arrangement and will be charged according to how much support they need. Students will receive advice on all aspects of property letting. In this vein we are keen to broker good relationships and work in partnership with private landlords from all over the city. We really believe that this new service will provide tangible benefits to both the students, who will receive free help and support and the landlords who gain a better relationship with their tenants via the support structure of the Students' Union.

Chris and Sally joined UWE in August and have already set out to establish strong relationships with local councils in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. They are keen to encourage the use of the councils' accreditation scheme to achieve a more uniform standard of accommodation.

The Student Letting Service will be officially launched by Janet Biggin, Chairman of Civic Duties from South Gloucestershire Council on 14 October.

Chris Scull concludes, “Student Lettings is all about making things better for students and we take seriously the matter of ensuring that students are well received within the local community. We will be working with UWE's Community Liaison teams and local authorities to ensure that this service becomes the blueprint for responsible letting excellence.”
