UWE students learn how to manage their money

Issue date: 30 April 2010

UWE Managing your money week: 10 – 14 May 2010
Bower Ashton and Glenside campuses

Cooking together, doing your food shopping when you're not hungry and planning ahead to allow time to save are some of the simple but helpful tips that could help University of the West of England students make the most of their money. Following on from the successful event at Frenchay in March, the Manage your money week is coming to Bower Ashton and Glenside Campus from 10-14 May 2010. This event is organised by Student Services and UWE's Student Union (UWESU).

Living on a student budget has always been challenging, but for students with accommodation costs and a gap in part-time job opportunities caused by the recession, financial difficulties can become a huge concern.

Kate White, Head of Student Advice and Welfare explains, “At the UWE Advice Service, we see about 3000 students a year, half of them to discuss financial issues. Financial difficulties can contribute to mental health difficulties, the missing of lectures and deadlines as well as under-performance in assessments. We realise that money is tight for most students and hope that this event will encourage greater financial awareness and where possible prevent problems from occurring.”

Financial Advisers from the Advice and Welfare Service will be on hand to offer advice and assistance on areas such as: checking credit ratings, creating a working budget, reclaiming bank charges and overpaid tax and financial heath checks to ensure students are receiving their full entitlement.

For those students graduating this year, there will be information on claiming means-tested benefits, student overdrafts vs graduate loans, council tax liability and postgraduate funding.

Kate White concludes, “We hope that this event will help students to manage their money, freeing them to focus on their academic studies, to enjoy the student experience and to help them achieve their potential once they graduate.”

Managing your Money week will run from Monday 10 May to Friday 14 May in Reception at Bower Ashton campus and in the Student Centre at Glenside.
