Next Wednesday sees the opening of a new Exhibition and Conference Centre (ECC) at the University of the West of England. Situated on the land recently purchased from HP the ECC will be the largest conference and exhibition space in the South West.

The official opening will give potential users the opportunity to take a good look at the enormous 9,000 square metre indoor arena boasting over 25 meeting rooms.

Professor Steve West, UWE's Vice-Chancellor will give a welcoming address to an invited audience to include UWE staff, students, governors and trustees, local government representatives, MP's, regional businesses, council leaders, regional universities, further education colleges and schools and current university customers.

Peter Cockburn, Head of Hospitality at UWE said, “As well as being the largest exhibition and entertainment venue in the South West, we are well positioned for all transport links, just half a mile away from the M32 and the same distance from Bristol Parkway meaning that the venue has the potential to attract around 2.5 million visitors who live within an hours drive.

“Up until recently UWE was only able to offer conference facilities for a few hundred people but now we can accommodate several thousand people. The main auditorium has already attracted huge interest from the many large local business on our doorstep and we are hosting the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS) Fair next March which will attract some 10,000 visitors over two days.

“The ECC is providing a much needed resource for the local economy and we have been working to ensure that we provide the right kind of facilities to cater for large scale events. Conference facilities include an upgrading of all meeting rooms with many of the larger rooms include state of the art presentation AV equipment. UWE catering has developed special menus to suit a range of different events. The facilities will at the very least equal those at larger hotels but with a bigger capacity and excellent transport links.

“The extent of the interest so far indicates that there has for some time been a big need for a sizeable venue in the region. We're very excited that UWE is now in a position to welcome a wider range of organisations and businesses and that we can now cater for much bigger events and conferences.”

Events planned include Exhibitions (e.g. Employers Fairs, Medical Presentations, Educational Displays, and Robotics demonstrations) conferences, meetings, product launches, annual general meetings, sporting events, public sector events, award ceremonies, training programmes and examinations.

Steve West said, “This launch marks an important milestone in the 25 year masterplan that will see UWE double in size and stature. We aim to become one of the top 50 universities in the UK in the next three years. The new Exhibition and Conference Centre coupled with state of the art residential facilities is another feather in UWE's cap that will make the university a central hub for key events across the region.”
