Good Bristol Bad Bristol – draw what you think this weekend

Issue date: 08 October 2009

'Picture your Future' Two Drawing and Applied Arts students from the University of the West of England are setting up an event called 'Picture Your Future' at Pizza Express, Corn Street on Saturday 10 October 2009.

'Picture Your Future' is part of 'The Big Draw' (http://www.campaignfordrawing.org)and Natasha Parson and Becky Diplock want to get people thinking about the local Bristol environment by creating two large scale collages.

Natasha explains, “Anyone can take part in 'Picture Your Future' this weekend at Pizza Express. We will create two giant collages of drawings with an eco theme showing Good Bristol and Bad Bristol. To start people off there will be two identical templates showing all the iconic images of the city. The Good Bristol will show everything clean and green and the Bad Bristol will show problems that will occur if we don't take care of Bristol.

“Pizza Express has given over a large part of the restaurant and will be running a promotion on the day so bring along the family and get involved. We are looking to involve people of all abilities so don't be inhibited, just come along and get drawing.”

The students have combined their interests in teaching and communication. Natasha wants to be an Art and Design teacher and Becky is planning to work in eco-communications. Natasha concludes, “This event is very important to us in terms of giving us professional practice – it gives us the opportunity to work with people, to create an exciting collaborative artwork and to raise awareness of the environmental issues in Bristol through the medium of drawing.

“Once finished the giant collages will be displayed in the restaurant for all to see and enjoy. We also hope that by getting involved people will get the chance to reflect on what is environmentally good and bad about the city.”

Dr Emma Ferry, Senior Lecturer in Visual Culture at UWE said, “These students have shown enormous enterprise and enthusiasm. The Big Draw is a brilliant event and it's great that Becky and Natasha have seen the potential of joining in and organising an event that involves people in blending drawing with environmental issues. Their work on Picture Your Future is also giving them invaluable experience that will help in their future career choices.”

There will be a Round Up Celebration at 16.00 with photos, music and pizza nibbles for all who take part.
