UWE welcomes Professor Arthur KC Li for 2009 Bolland Lecture

Professor Arthur KC Li, Emeritus Professor of Surgery of The Chinese University of Hong Kong will deliver this year's annual Bolland Lecture at the University of the West of England with a talk entitled 'The Ingredients for Education Reforms; The Experience of Hong Kong to Change in Education' on Wednesday 30 September at 18.00.

His passion and commitment for education is evident and he has been a great moderniser for further and higher education.”

Arthur Li, Emeritus Professor of Surgery of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, was born in 1945 in Hong Kong. He is a graduate of both the University of Cambridge and undertook his clinical studies at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School of London.

Professor Li received his full accreditation in General Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1978. He specialised at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in hepatobiliary and upper gastrointestinal surgery. In 1981 he was awarded Doctor of Medicine by Cambridge University. In 1980 he was awarded the European Society for Surgical Research Prize and in 1982, the Moynihan Medal of the Associations of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.

Professor Li was appointed to the Foundation Chair of Surgery at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1982. In 1983 he became President of the Hong Kong Surgical Society and was President of The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong from 1993-1996. In 1992 he was elected Dean of the Medical Faculty. In 1996 he was appointed Vice-Chancellor by the Council of the Chinese University. From 2002 to 2007 he was the Secretary for Education and Manpower Bureau and a member of the Executive Council of the Hong Kong SAR Government.

Professor Li was a Hong Kong Affairs Advisor to the People's Republic of China. He is also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. He is Deputy Chairman of the Bank of East Asia Limited, non-independent and non-executive Director of AFFIN Holdings Berhad in Malaysia and independent non-executive Director of Wilmar China (HK) Ltd.

Professor Li was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of the West of England on Monday 16 October 2006.

The Bolland Lecture was established in 1976 to commemorate Dr Robert Bolland, who held the post of Director of Bristol Polytechnic from its foundation in 1969 to his death in 1974. The lecture will be followed by a buffet supper.
