Clearing opened doors of opportunity for me, says Mustofa

Issue date: 11 August 2009

Mustofa Gulam Mustofa Gulam is now in his fourth year at the University of the West of England, having decided to stay on and complete the postgraduate Legal Practice Course.

After getting A levels at Swindon College Mustofa decided to get some work experience and joined the prison service. Although he was happy in this career, he realised a university education would open other doors of opportunity for him.

“My first choice of University to study for an undergraduate Law degree was UWE,” said Mustofa.

“I had missed the deadline to apply in 2004 so I went through clearing in July 2005 and I have not regretted it since. I enjoyed studying Law here so much that I stayed on for the LPC.

“I found the staff helpful and after about five minutes on the phone to confirm my details and grade I was offered a place on the course and I accepted and have not looked back since.

“During the Clearing process they did not ask me why I got the grades that I had or any uncomfortable questions - they simply asked why did I choose UWE. I got on to the course I wanted - my A level in General studies was the grade that allowed me to get on the course - and I am very pleased that I did.”

His advice to students going through Clearing this year is, “Do not panic or worry too much because if all universities are like UWE then you have nothing to worry about.

“In fact Universities want you to join them but you just have to show that you can work hard enough and succeed on the course.

You basically have to sell yourself to them and if you believe in your ability then the university will too, just be positive and confident.”

Mustofa has enjoyed his time at UWE and would recommend it to others. He said, “Fresher's week is great and the societies and clubs are vast in number so there is lots to do when you are not studying.”
