UWE students join Ramshackle Rally

Issue date: 31 July 2009

The Ramshackle Rally Three Biomedical students and one English graduate, from the University of the West of England, are going to drive from Bristol to Krakow in an old banger to raise money for Alzheimer's research.

The student team comprises Edward Cribb, Michael Sophocli, Adrian Martin and Andrew Hillock who are taking part in the Ramshackle Rally. The team who are calling themselves the 'VW Golfers' will depart Bristol on 5 August in their 17 year old customised, golfing themed, VW Golf for the starting point of the rally in Calais.

The 1,600 mile journey is not a race; the challenge is to reach the final destination in a car that is worth less than £150. All usual road safety regulations must be adhered to in each of the countries that the students travel through. All teams stop at pre-arranged points at the end of each day and the aim is to get as many ramshackle vehicles to Krakow as possible. The event starts in Calais on 7 August with all vehicles aiming to reach Krakow four days later on 10 August.

Edward Cribb, the team leader, said, “We heard about a friend who was taking part and decided to have a go ourselves. It seemed like an ideal opportunity to try to raise some money for charity. We chose the Alzheimer's Society which has a personal resonance for me as my grandmother is suffering the late stages of Alzheimer's. The Alzheimer's Society offers support for carers of people with Alzheimer's and conducts and funds research into the condition.

“We chose the golfing theme to reflect the make of the car and for fun have painted the car in Burberry colours and added a fake grass roof. A VW dealership in Bristol, Heritage Volkswagen, has offered to give the car a thorough service before we leave and Volkswagen UK has donated to the Alzheimer's Society which is great news.

“We have also received support from New Care, a company based in my home town of Newton Abbott, who have covered all accommodation costs for the team during the trip.”

Neil Hunt, Chief Executive, Alzheimer's Society says, “We are delighted that the VW Golfers team from the University of the West of England have chosen to raise money for Alzheimer's Society . There are 4,125 people currently living with dementia in the Bristol area and any funds raised will help to provide vital support for people with dementia and their carers. Alzheimer's Society relies on such generosity to help it support people with dementia today and find a cure for tomorrow. We wish the team luck on their 1,600 mile journey across to Krakow.”
