Kick off 18.00 (Gate opens at 17.00)

Men's and women's football teams from The University of the West of England and the University of Bristol will take to the field as part of the annual Varsity series at the Memorial Stadium on 30 April.

The event is one of a series of sporting challenges between students at Bristol's two universities. The varsity series is a heady mix of fun and rivalry, with an increasing number of students and spectators enjoying the events.

Phil Ryan, UWE Men's Football Vice President, said, “Last year's thrilling encounter at Manor Farm saw UWE's first men's team win the Football Varsity challenge for the first time in the event's history. This achievement signalled a turning point for our club, which is now placed second in league 1A in the British Universities and Colleges Sports league table, our highest ever ranking. With Bristol University moving in the opposite direction, we envisage a win that should cement our status as Bristol's biggest and best University side. I'd like to thank our committed and professional coaching staff, Danny, Mel and Marcus. We would not be in such a strong position without their time, energy and dedication.”

The UWE women's football team is equally hopeful of a good result, according to Danni Pearson, Women's Football Club Captain. She says, “We are really looking forward to the 2009 Varsity and after finishing a respectable 3rd in the league, we have played a number of warm up of friendly matches. Playing at the Memorial Stadium will be a great experience for all the girls. When I step out onto the turf, it'll be the proudest moment of my football career! We have a very strong squad and I know that we will give Bristol a very good game and we're definitely hoping to win.”

Amy Clift of University of Bristol Women's Football, says they are also very confident of claiming the trophy, “Varsity gives us a fantastic opportunity to prove how good we have become over the past season. Several first team players will be playing their last games at University level, whilst for a few this is their first varsity match ever. We're confident that we have the right combination of youth, experience, speed, strength and skill to make a big impact, and make this an enjoyable game to watch as we look to retaining our Varsity champion status for another year!”

Speaking about the Varsity series, UWE Sports President Lily Priggs says, “Last year UWE exceeded expectation in the Varsity series by bringing back 8 of the 13 trophies. This year we're looking forward to the challenge of the Football Varsity. It's a very popular date in the annual sporting calendar and we are hoping for a big crowd at the memorial stadium.”
