February is time for 'Feeling Good' at UWE

Issue date: 29 January 2009

Feel Good February 2009 February is often thought of as a gloomy time of year, but students at the University of the West of England are being invited to dispel the winter blues with a series of health and wellbeing events as part of 'Feel Good February'.

Now in its third successful year, Feel Good February includes a wide range of activities, taster sessions and events that focus on health, fitness and wellbeing. UWE students and staff are offered the chance to get involved in new activities, try new sports and get active, helping them to 'feel good'.

From stress busting workshops, to postural checks, health check ups and a variety of complimentary therapies such as Indian head massage, Alexander technique and aromatherapy, there are plenty of opportunities for students to boost their health and wellbeing. They can also try out a new sport such as cricket, Frisbee golf, Tae Kwon Do, trampoline, ultimate Frisbee and volleyball, or get fit with Pilates or a lunchtime walk.

During the month there will also be a range of student volunteering events such as the Big Beach Clean 2009 and bat box building and to support more active travel there will be free safety checks for bikes.

Feedback from the 2007 event was very positive both about the wide range of events on offer and about the chance to focus on health and fitness.

Judy Orme, who leads UWE's Healthy University Group, says, “UWE is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of students, staff and the wider community. Nowadays students frequently juggle their studies with work, as well as an active social life. Feel Good February is an opportunity for them to focus on themselves and how they feel. The University is committed to actively promoting and supporting healthy and sustainable environments for all students and staff. The taster sessions and activities on offer encourage everyone to become involved in new aspects of all that is on offer at UWE as well as incorporating some relaxation, fitness and health awareness into their busy lives.”

For the full range of events, activities and opportunities available to UWE students and staff please see the Feel Good February website for full details.
