The Right Reverend Barry Rogerson, until recently the Bishop of Bristol, is to be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of the West of England in recognition of his contribution to the wellbeing of the City and Diocese of Bristol and his commitment to economic and social justice and to ecumenical co-operation world-wide. Barry Rogerson was Bishop of Bristol from 1985 until November 2002.
The degree will be conferred by the Chancellor of the University of the West of England, the Right Honourable Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, DBE at a special ceremony at Bristol Cathedral on Wednesday 9 July.
Following the conferment of the award there will be a Bristol Society Lecture and supper sponsored by Bristol Cathedral and UWE. The University Chancellor, Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, President of the Family Division of the High Court, will speak on ‘The role of the law in medical decisions’.
This is the second time Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss has been invited to give a Bristol Society lecture, an honour which reflects the success of her previous address to members.
The Bristol Society is administered by Business West, and aims to attract nationally and internationally-known speakers to a series of lectures in the city. Lectures are open to members and their guests.
The Ceremony will take place from 7.00pm on Wednesday 9 July at Bristol Cathedral. The Lecture starts at 7.20pm and is open to members and their guests.
