UWE OPENS NEW HEALTH CARE EDUCATION CENTRE IN GLOUCESTER
15 May 2002
The new £1.5 million Faculty of Health and Social Care Gloucester Centre at UWE's Hartpury Campus is to be officially opened on Tuesday 21 May. The building will be opened by Mariella Dexter, Chief Executive of the Avon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire NHS Workforce Development Confederation.
The Centre is the result of UWE's significant investment in Gloucester to support health care education. It features innovative facilities and technology including a state of the art IT suite and a Nursing Skills Suite where students can practice skills in a controlled environment. The Centre also contains a revolutionary SimMan resuscitation simulator. This device is designed to simulate extremely realistic patient care scenarios and will challenge and test student's clinical and decision making skills in life saving situations.
The Centre, which is based at Hartpury College, also contains 7 modern teaching rooms, staff rooms and a meeting room for 100 people. There is also access to many of Hartpury Colleges facilities such as a restaurant and coffee shop, excellent sporting facilities including a new sports hall and an outdoor swimming pool, and student's also have access to one of the best health and social care libraries in the country.
The Dean of the Faculty Professor Steve West says that staff and students will benefit from the new facilities and the new Centre will support UWE's excellent reputation in health care education.
" I am delighted that UWE has been able to make a significant investment in Gloucester to support health care education. The new building will enable us to develop our base and expand our provision with Gloucester and the surrounding communities. We are looking forward to delivering our pre-registration nursing programmes in state of the art facilities and are also looking at how we can develop our post-registration and postgraduate capabilities".
" The future looks very exciting as we work towards closer collaboration with the NHS Trusts and Social Services, in support of the modernisation agendas. We are particularly keen to collaborate with the University of Bristol and others on the development of Clinical Academies and hope that the Faculty's base at Hartpury College will be seen as an important resource hub for the future".
