South Bristol residents to benefit from new UWE buses

Issue date: 11 February 2008

Ulink Residents living in the Southville and Redcliffe areas of Bristol are set to benefit when the new Ulink bus service, set up by the University of the West of England (UWE), is extended to members of the public from 18 February.

Set up by UWE in September last year, Ulink provides a high quality low cost bus service for students and staff, linking UWE's Campuses to the City centre. U-link was developed in collaboration with Wessex Connect.

The brand new Ulink buses are painted in distinct red and white colours. The buses are quiet and comfortable and provide buggy and wheelchair access.

Service U1 runs from the UWE Bower Ashton Campus at Ashton Court, along Coronation Road, stopping at Vauxhall Bridge, Beauley Road, Camden Road, Dean Lane and ASDA, then on to Clanage Road, Temple Meads, Broadmead and Gloucester Road.

Steve Ward, UWE's Travel Planner explains, “We are opening up the Ulink buses to the general public for a trial period until September to test the demand for the service. We believe the Ulink service is a fast and efficient way to get from Southville into the city centre. At the moment our students are mostly traveling from the centre of the city out to the Bower Ashton Campus, so this means the buses are often coming back empty into the city centre. We are mindful of the need to make our transport as sustainable as possible, so offering this service to local people will help make better use of this resource. We believe our fares are good value for money, and the buses are comfortable and pleasant to travel on.”

Unlimited all day travel on all Ulink buses will be just £3.00 (adult) and £2.00 (child). Monthly passes are even better value, with adult daily travel working out at just £1.30 a day. Passes will be available from several local shops – see the website or notices on the buses for details.
