Bright ideas aimed at making children’s experiences of hospital less frightening were designed into plans for the new Bristol Children’s Hospital from the start. These include light, colourful surroundings, child-height windows and furniture, and themes to distinguish the different levels. Original artworks include dozens of hand-drawn tiles used to wonderful effect in treatment areas like the hydrotherapy pool. Now that the hospital has been in use for over six months, researchers from the University of the West of England have been chosen to find out what impact these new surroundings are making on children, parents and staff.

Richard Hogg is studying International Politics in the Faculty of Economics and Social Science at UWE. He scored three average A level grades which meant that he was refused a place at his first choice at university. “ I was so disappointed,” he said “I’d got 3 D’s which was way below my capabilities. Everyone opening their results was either elated or crying. I went home feeling worried and annoyed. I called my first choice on the off chance that there might have been a space for me but they practically laughed at me. I rang my local university in Reading where I knew some of the teaching staff but things didn’t look very hopeful. I sat down with my copy of the Which Way supplement and one advert stood out. It was for UWE. I rushed back to the student resources centre at school and got out the prospectus. I was impressed to find out that John Sloman, who writes many of the textbooks for A-level Economics, worked in the Economics and Social Science Department at the university.

When you first meet Edwin Dyson you are impressed by his communication skills and his natural charisma. As Students’ Union President at one of the largest universities in the country these are essential skills. But Edwin Dyson has also a great deal of tenacity and determination to succeed in his academic studies. He left school at the age of 18 with no A Levels and took a job as a Deputy Manager in a pub restaurant in his home town of Nottingham where he worked for 2 ½ years. At the age of 22 he decided he wanted to pursue his goal of studying at University and took two A Levels in one year - Psychology and Sociology. - UWE DEVELOPS DETECTORS FOR OESTROGEN IN RIVER WATER - 26/07/2001
Small quantities of oestrogens, which are female hormones, are excreted from the body and thus enter the sewage system. Although these chemicals seem to be largely removed in sewage treatment, it seems that minute quantities remain and thus can enter rivers to which treated sewage is discharged. These very low levels of oestrogens have been shown to be responsible for signs of sex changes in male fish in rivers to which sewage is discharged - they begin to show some female characteristics. Now, scientists at the University of the West of England (UWE) have developed highly sensitive chemical analysis procedures that can detect minute traces of these hormones.

The University of the West of England has announced that it has been offered £0.5m funding from the SouthWest Regional Development Agency to create a business incubation unit focussing on digital media and eCommerce in the centre of Bristol. Dr Ursula Lucas, an accountancy lecturer from Bristol Business School based at the University of the West of England, has won a prestigious national teaching fellowship. The award recognises Dr Lucas as being one of the best higher education lecturers in the country. Invasive methods for the pre-natal testing of babies, such as amniocentesis, carry their own risks. There are approximately 620,000 pregnancies each year in the UK, of which around 31,000 (5%) are subject to invasive procedures. At least 310 miscarriages result from these procedures.

It includes a collaborative audio Portrait of Edgar Allan Poe, radio demo tapes, and music and sound for films, all produced using UWE's state of the art facilities. Recent figures show that English is the mother tongue of around 400 million people in the world - and is the official language of another 400 million. UWE has seen employment rise to an all time high and unemployment at an all time low. Employment, for all full time first degree graduates, has grown by over 10% since 1999. Level of unemployment at graduation has fallen significantly too, down from 5.5% in 1999 to 3.7% for all year 2000 graduates.

Bumpy irregular surfaces on ceramic tiles, scratches on marble slabs and dents in ceramic products cost manufacturers a fortune in quality control systems. In many cases highly trained quality control staff are employed to scrutinise defects in product surfaces. This can be expensive, tedious, time consuming and inaccurate. A researcher from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of the West of England has come up with an automised technique to check surface defects which could solve this problem.

Not satisfied with winning the world surf kayaking championships, UWE student Ben Thomas, has built his own kayak.
As part of his final year project Ben needed to design and manufacture a kayak which will contribute towards his award as a qualified teacher of Design and Technology. Professor Leslie Bunt, Senior Research Fellow in Music therapy at the University of the West of England, has received a lottery grant of £167,000 on behalf of MusicSpace, a nationally registered charity of which he is the Director.
