UWE Bristol links up with Glastonbury Festival to promote sustainability

The University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) is delighted to announce a five-year official partnership with Glastonbury Festival.

Professor Steve West, President and Vice-Chancellor at UWE Bristol, has visited Worthy Farm to meet with Michael Eavis.

The agreement will last for five years and formalises ongoing work between the two organisations.

Professor West said, “This partnership cements a relationship with the festival that has been working for a number of years.

“We are focusing on sustainability projects that matter deeply to the University and resonate with the ethos of Glastonbury Festival.

“The partnership means we can contribute to helping Glastonbury Festival with waste reduction and energy efficiency and also demonstrate Pee Power, a flagship research project for UWE Bristol.”

The Pee Power urinal that turns urine into electricity, designed by researchers in Bristol BioEnergy Centre (BBiC) based at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) at UWE Bristol, has been in operation at the festival since 2015.

The urinal showcases a technology that has the potential to change the lives of those living in countries where sanitation and electricity are off grid.

The Pee Power team from BBiC, Oxfam and shelter manufacturers Dunster House will showcase the technology at the festival in advance of planned trials in refugee camps in developing countries.

The partnership also celebrates the work carried out by teams of students and volunteers who will undertake research designed to help festival organisers reduce waste in the campsites.

UWE students will also research energy efficiency measures in collaboration with the festival power providers, stage production teams and mobile traders.

The agreement between the University and the festival states: 'The parties commit themselves to exploring mutually beneficial collaborative projects promoting sustainable development and providing valuable opportunities for students to gain experience of working in this unique environment.'
