Professor Steve West, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), has received a CBE from the Prince of Wales in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The investiture ceremony took place earlier today, with Professor West's family and friends in attendance.

He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours list 2017 for services to Higher Education.

Professor West has made a significant contribution to higher education and health over many years, furthering educational opportunities for young people by building relationships and partnerships for UWE Bristol with business organisations, schools and colleges.

He has played a role in the development of professional health education as Chair of the Health Education and Research Policy Network at Universities UK, and improved collaboration, innovation, adoption and the spread of best practice and enterprise in health and social care as Chair of the West of England Academic Health Science Network.

In recent years, he has also chaired CBI South West, University Alliance and the Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Initiative and now the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership.

Professor West said: “It has been a huge privilege to be honoured in this very special way. I have been supported throughout my career by family, friends and colleagues who have been amazing and I hope they see that this honour is about them as well.

“Today was a fantastic day for my wife, mum and sister who all joined me at the Palace. The hint of sadness was that my dad wasn't there, but I'm sure he would have been very proud and moved by the whole occasion.”
