With Freshers' Week fast approaching, students at UWE Bristol are set to benefit from the impressive new facilities on offer at the new purpose built Students' Union building on Frenchay Campus. The building will be officially opened at a launch event on Tuesday 1 September 2015.

The new building forms a key part of UWE's Masterplan, which aims to satisfy UWE Bristol's changing needs over the next 25 years with a range of building proposals supported by the necessary infrastructure.

The new £9.8 m Students' Union is two interlinked buildings comprising approximately 3,000 square metres, bringing all SU services in one accessible location so that students will easily be able to find the services they need.

The new sustainable, energy efficient facility will provide brand new vibrant spaces to enhance the work of student reps, volunteering, societies, sports and networks for students in a multi-purpose student engagement/social area, as well as a café, bar, shop and a bookable studio space.

In addition there are outdoor landscaped spaces and a courtyard which can be used as additional space with marquees for major annual events such as Freshers'.

Jack Polson, Students' Union President, said, “We are extremely excited to open our amazing new building. The increased social space will create more opportunities for students to meet, engage in amazing opportunities and feel part of their student community. There has never been a better time to be at UWE, so join in, speak up and be more!"

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve West, said, “It's a wonderful start to the new University term, that we're able to offer these fantastic new facilities to our students. This Centre is about putting students at the heart of our thinking and will provide a vibrant and attractive environment for them to engage fully with the SU and what it has to offer.

“It's our vision to build a University for the 21st Century, providing the best possible facilities for our students and the completion of this building is an important milestone in the campus redevelopment. With construction underway on the new Faculty of Business and Law Building, planning approval granted for major developments at Bower Ashton Campus and, starting in September, new teaching spaces at the Arnolfini for many of our Creative Arts students, it's an exciting time to be at UWE Bristol. ”

The Students' Union Building is a concept design by London based Architects Hawkins Brown which was developed by Stride Treglown. It was constructed by BAM with M & E Systems designed and installed by F P Hurley. JDL Consultants were the civil and structural engineers.

UWE appointed Sweett UK Ltd as Project Managers and Turner and Townsend as Cost Consultants. Faithful and Gould were CDMC and Gage and Tupper were NEC Supervisors.
