Issue date: 26 June 2002
BAFTA award winner Mike Bullen, writer of the TV show Cold Feet will be presenting the awards at the University of the West of England’s Design & Media Awards 2002 tomorrow night (Thursday 27 June 2002). The event at Watershed Media Centre celebrates the outstanding work produced by final year graduating students studying animation, design, multimedia, sound and video.
Barbara Hawkins, head of Communication Media at UWE said, “The Design and Media Awards are a culmination of 3 years hard work by our students, many of whom have also completed work placements with the local media industry. It is this collaboration that gives our students a real head start after graduation.”
As well as presenting the prizes at tomorrow night’s event, Mike Bullen has also given a guest lecture to the students studying Time-Based Media at UWE. Mike says, “A good script is the key to any successful television drama or film. The script is the foundation from which the director and actors work and without solid foundations even the most talented will fail.”
The UWE students clearly took notice of what Mike said, as the nominations for best screenwriter are some of the strongest yet.
Other award categories include animation, drama, cinematography, sound, print, editing, documentary, new media, photography and motion graphics. The awards up for grabs are sponsored by big names such as Aardman Animation, AMK Technology Services, BBC MediaArc, BDH, Big Squid, The Alternative Media Company, EuroRSG Circle, GWR, Hammerhead Design, Intellect Publishing, Panasonic, 4:2:2 Ltd, Sign Solutions and Vinten Broadcast, demonstrating how supportive the industry is of emerging new talent.
However, the media industry is not the only group collaborating with UWE media students. Meia Allegranza, whose film is nominated for an award, worked very closely with Scotland Yard the Metropolitan Police and Avon & Somerset Police. The documentary about drug rape, Spiked, is now being used by these police forces as part of their police training programme and also to warn young women about the dangers of drug rape.
