UWE Bristol will award the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Business Administration to Professor Dato' Dr. Hassan Said.
Taylor's University, Malaysia is UWE Bristol's most successful international partnership spanning over ten years. This Honorary Degree is awarded to Professor Dato' Dr. Hassan Said in recognition of his visionary leadership in establishing a College and now University of excellence with whom UWE Bristol is proud to work.
The Honorary Degree will be conferred at the Awards Ceremony of the Faculty of Business and Law on Wednesday 28 November at Bristol Cathedral.
Hassan received his Bachelor Degree in Mathematics from the University of Manchester in 1979, his Master of Science from Brunel University in 1981 and his PhD from Brunel in 1984. Hassan's specialisation is in Computer Aided Geometric Design and he introduced a new class of blending functions, namely the generalised Ball basis functions (sometimes referred to as Said basis functions).
Upon completion of his PhD and his return to Malaysia, Hassan joined Universiti Sains Malaysia as a lecturer in Mathematics at the School of Mathematical Science. In 1990 he was appointed Dean of the School. He was appointed as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University in 1995.
In 1998 Hassan was seconded to the Ministry of Education as the Director of the Department of Higher Education, Malaysia and in 2005 became Director General. Whilst at the Ministry of Higher Education, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of several local universities as well as being a Governing Board member of the South-East Asia Minister for the Regional Centre of Higher Education (SEAMO-RIHED).
August 2008 saw Professor Dato' Dr. Said become Vice-Chancellor and President of Taylors University, Malaysia. The development of a range of international programmes with partners across the globe has been a key achievement of Taylor's University under Hassan's leadership. UWE Bristol is proud to offer dual degrees in conjunction with Taylor's University in the fields of Banking, Finance and Accounting. Both institutions believe in preparing their graduates for the global marketplace offering courses that have a practical and professional focus.
Professor Dato' Dr. Hassan Said is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Open University Malaysia (OUM), and the Asia e–University (AeU). He is also a Governing Board member of Kolej Yayasan Sabah, and member of the Academic Development Panel of INCEIF, Malaysia and Board Member of the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF), Security Commission, Malaysia.
He is a fellow of the Malaysian Mathematical Society, a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical and Its Application, UK (FIMA) and a fellow of the Academy of Science of Malaysia (FASc). He has received numerous Federal and State Honours as well as the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur Award from the Government of France.
