Issue date: 16 April 2012

Jamie Bowen and Sarah Clark

UWE Bristol students Sarah Clark and Jamie Bowen both brought back medals after competing in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) championships in March. Both students competed in the 'Kumite' event which took place at the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in Sheffield.

Clark won gold with her 1st place in the Women's Senior Kumite -55KG and fellow student Bowen won silver in the Men's Senior Kumite -60KG narrowly missing out on the gold medal to Garrick Eastwood of Teeside University.

Kumiteis the combative element of karate. Two fighters will fight for a set time, (usually three minutes for men and two for women). The idea is based on a 'first to score system' using your speed, balance and power to score on your opponent.

Sarah, who studies Adult Nursing at the University said, “The competition was tough, but I performed well, stuck to my game plan and got the result I wanted.”

Sarah first got into her sport at the age of six in her hometown of Weston-super-Mare where she joined The Weston Karate Union (WKU). Keen on taking it to a higher level Sarah applied to take part in the BUCS games representing UWE Bristol, her ambitions are set on joining the England team.

Jamie also developed an interest in Karate at a young age after being encouraged by a friend during his childhood in Worcester. From the age of 18, Jamie was keen to take his sport to the next level. He now trains in Bristol whilst studying Law at UWE Bristol.

Jamie said, “The competition was tough and to fight so well was pleasing, obviously the end result wasn't quite what I had hoped for however I am drawing the positives from it and want to build on this performance.”

Sarah and Jamie were both accepted onto the universities 'EliteUWE' scheme. Its members are given free access to physiotherapy, nutritional evaluation and a strength training programme to support exceptional athletes.

Steve Lock, UWE Bristol's Centre for Sport's Strength and Conditioning Manager said, “Sarah and Jamie are both members of the UWE Bristol elite athlete group and have regularly attended Strength and Conditioning sessions in preparation for a number of competitions this year which have included BUCs and continue with the English and World Championships that take place in the summer.

“Both Sarah and Jamie are extremely dedicated athletes and have utilised the elite athlete program which has seen them being able to utilise the full holistic sports science program. They've also been found training before and after lectures using the Centre for Sport facilities such as the sports hall for technique and sparring sessions and the UWE Bristol Performance Gym for conditioning. Both athletes plan their training around busy diaries that include lectures, technical training, physical conditioning, home life and placements. Their recent results of Gold (Sarah) and Silver (Jamie) at Bucs are testament to the hard work and dedication that they have both shown and we look forward to helping them prepare for the World Championships.”
