UWE Bristol is hosting a free D&AD Education Day in Bristol on 25 January to give art and design students from across the region a chance to break into the creative industries. Among the events are one-on-one portfolio surgeries where students can get professional feedback on their work.
D&AD is a not for profit member organisation that aims to inform, educate and inspire those who work in and around the creative industries. Its Education Programme provides a vital link into industry for emerging talent.
The D&AD Education Day at UWE Bristol will enable students to find out how D&AD can help them get their first break and supports them throughout their creative career. It is free and around 200 students and staff from D&AD Education Network member institutions such as UWE Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Falmouth, Cardiff and Bournemouth are welcome to attend.
Keynote speaker, ex-Airside designer Jamie Wieck, who created the website The 50 Things Every Designer Should Know, will explain how he cracked the industry, imparting practical tips and insider insights.
The programme runs from 11:00 to 18:00 and includes workshops, individual appointments for students to share their portfolio with professionals from agencies such as Aardman Digital and Ginger Monkey, a meeting for D&AD student reps, tips on how to succeed in the D&AD student awards, and a get-together for tutors to share research findings and best practice.
The D&AD Education Day has been co-ordinated at UWE Bristol by Graphic Design senior lecturer John Paul Dowling who said, “Students have a really valuable opportunity to bring along their portfolios for the professionals to cast their eyes over. The advisors won't be expecting a 'perfect' fully formed portfolio - just bring your work in the most suitable format and make sure you can present it in a coherent way.”
“It is a chance to promote yourself, so plan how you'll explain your work and come prepared with questions.”
Jessica Antwi-Boasiako, D&AD Education and Professional Development Manager, said, “We are delighted to be able to hold a D&AD Education Day in Bristol as part of our 6-leg regional tour. We are looking forward to getting students from across the West Country together to nurture their careers and set them on the path to D&AD Student Awards success.”
The event will be held at UWE Bristol's Bower Ashton Campus, Kennel Lodge Road, Bristol BS3 2JT.
