Cancer specialist appointed to Pro Vice-Chancellor role

Helen Langton A children's cancer specialist has been appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of the West of England.

Professor Helen Langton will take up post at UWE in October 2010. Currently she is Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Sciences at the University of Derby where she has worked for the past four years.

Professor Langton is not a newcomer to Bristol or to UWE. She ran cancer care courses in the early 1990s and was involved in the merger with UWE, working as Head of School for children's nursing and later adult nursing.

“I'm delighted to be returning to Bristol,” commented Professor Langton, “I'm really looking forward to taking up this post at UWE and working with colleagues to take the Faculty forward.”

Professor Steve West, UWE Vice-Chancellor said, “We are thrilled that Helen Langton has decided to return to Bristol and join us at UWE. We are building a growing reputation for excellence in cancer care and research and Helen's experience will be invaluable in this respect.”

Originally Professor Langton qualified as a general nurse at Guys Hospital, London and then as a children's nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. She has gone on to specialise in working with children with cancer and her Professorship is in children's cancer nursing

She is involved in several national working groups, of particular note as co-chair of the Professional Advisory Board for Nursing and Midwifery at the Department of Health. She has held Dean and Associate Dean roles at the University of Derby and the University of Coventry respectively.

Helen Langton is married to a Bristol based G.P. and they have four children.
