The University of the West of England in Bristol, United Kingdom will celebrate the achievements of its international alumni at a special convocation ceremony on Sunday 28 March in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Chancellor, The RT Hon, The Baroness Butler-Sloss GBE, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve West and distinguished guests will welcome UWE graduates from Malaysia, Vietnam, China and Singapore to a ceremony to commemorate their graduation with families and friends.
UWE Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steve West who is attending the event, said, “Studying overseas is a big investment for students and their families. The UWE Convocation Ceremony in Malaysia is a wonderful opportunity for the University and partner colleges to thank international students for choosing to study at UWE and to congratulate them and their families on their achievements. Many of the graduates attending were unable to attend their original Awards Ceremonies in Bristol, so this will be a really memorable occasion.”
UWE Business, Law and Creative Arts graduates will don the traditional red and black academic robes and will be photographed before the one hour ceremony. This will be followed by a drinks reception and Chinese buffet lunch. The guest speaker at the ceremony is Justice Datuk Seri James Foong, Judge of the Federal Court of Malaysia.
The University has well established partnerships with universities and colleges across Southeast Asia. Since 2005, Bristol Business School has been delivering a successful undergraduate partnership with Taylor's College in Malaysia and more recently under the UWE-Vietnam Universities Partnership Scheme; Vietnamese Law graduates have had the opportunity to spend time at the Bristol Law School as part of their postgraduate law qualification in LLM International Trade Law.
Two of the graduates who will attend the ceremony, shared their experiences of studying at UWE.
BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance graduate, Sher Lyn Chew completed her four year degree at Bristol Business School in 2009. She has developed a successful career in Malaysia and works for ECM Libra Investment Bank. After overcoming some initial homesickness, she really enjoyed her experience of studying in Bristol. She said, “Studying in Bristol was amazing and I never wanted to leave! The Convocation Ceremony in Kuala Lumpur is definitely something different and it's great to have all your loved ones there.”
Vietnamese Law graduate, Chau Huy Quang, completed his masters degree in LLM International Trade Law in 2009 and has established a successful legal career with LCT Lawyers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He said, “I had an excellent time studying at UWE. It was the first time I had been to the UK and the tutors were really friendly and helped me gradually overcome initial difficulties like language, life style and environment. My family and I are very excited about attending the ceremony and I'm grateful to the University for creating this opportunity for us.”
