Issue date: 11 February 2010

Abi Robinson The University of the West of England continues to make waves in the world of hockey as five female hockey players from UWE's Women's team have been selected for the English Universities Women's team. The UWE players will travel to the British Universities Home Nations Event in Edinburgh on 13-15 April 2010.

The five players were selected following trials at Coventry University on 7 February. This is a big achievement for the UWE team who now have the five players judged to be amongst the 20 top players in England from an initial pool of over 60 nominated athletes. The final 18 are soon to be selected by the management team with the remaining two players being non-travelling reserves.

When the BUCS Home Nations gets underway the selected players will take on other top players from Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish Universities with the aim of being crowned University Champions of the UK.

Of the five women selected, Sian French (currently the UWE Women's Hockey Captain) and Emma Speake (both Wales Under 21 players) are members of the Elite UWE programme which provides exceptional players with a tailored support programme throughout the year including physiotherapy, strength training and sports nutrition.

The other three players selected are: Rachel John (Wales Under 18), Abi Robinson (Clifton Ladies and England under 18) and Amy Simmons (Reading Ladies).

Richard Bennett, Sports Performance Manager at the UWE Centre for Sport, said “The BUCS Home Nations is an excellent opportunity for these athletes to experience a multi-sport environment and prepares them well for future international honours.

“Alongside hockey, the BUCS Home Nations consists of basketball, netball, rugby 7s and football and is a showcase of the best players in the University sector.”

UWE's dedicated Women's Hockey coach, Jonathon Codling, who has been supporting the players in the run up to the event, added “The current performances are representative of the high standard of sports being played at the University helped by a dedicated team of staff and state of the art facilities.”

The University is also proud to be working in partnership with England Hockey and has recently hosted the indoor England Hockey games in its competition standard Sports Hall on Frenchay Campus which brought some of England's best indoor hockey player's right here to Bristol.
